about

"In the summer of 2016 I traveled to Iceland and the Faroe Islands. One of the most striking things about these two countries is that their landscapes are (almost) entirely devoid of trees. In general it felt surreal to walk around and explore them. I wanted this album to reflect that dreamlike feeling I had when I was there. The second thing that struck me about these places, especially the Faroe Islands, is how harsh and hostile of a place it is. Many of the Faroe Islands can only be reached by a small boat and because there are no trees there is little shelter from wind and rain. The winters only have a few hours of very dim light because of how far north the islands are located. Residents I spoke to told me about how lonely and emotionally devastating the winters can be simply due to the cold and lack of light day after day. I tried to capture this feeling in some of tracks by creating large soundscapes with lots of space to give Yvette’s violin work more emotional impact. These soundscapes also help capture the sense of awe I felt seeing the epic mountains and valleys in Iceland and the Faroe Islands.

I want to thank Mark Kuykendall, all wonderful musicians I’ve had the opportunity to record with, Martin Pierlot, Benjamin Hill, Samuel Regan, Sarah Reid, and most of all Yvette Holzwarth who’s performances are always incredibly beautiful and inspiring." -Tristan François de Liège
