about

Patrick:
The recordings here present humanistic electronic re-sampling and echoing done by Tristan of a series of viola melodies played in St. Andrew’s church (with other electronic elements added). We used movements from Tristan’s viola suite (I, III), and one melody of mine written for a student “Dropping Your Favorite Pokemon Card Into the Pool” (II). Within the reverberant space of the church, the delays and revisiting of previously played melodies created by Tristan’s electronic contributions led to a hybrid feeling of space, with echoes off stone and echoes in the wires joining together.

Tristan:
I met Patrick when I wrote a composition for a trio he was performing with, involving violin and koto with Patrick on viola. After seeing Patrick perform in DIY spaces and in other contexts, I admired his improvisational skill, as well as his ear for creating textures, as you can hear on his album Turtle Feet. Patrick also later played viola in my first string quartet compositions.
My uncle is a baroque musician who often records in cathedrals and churches, and so I took inspiration from him in my idea to record strings in a cathedral to take advantage of the natural reverb of the space. The improvisation and recording was very memorable, as we were in this vast, open space, with people coming into pray as Patrick was playing, and I felt a particular sense of shared peace and reflection with them as we were all in a meditative state.
